…Doctors at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick recently removed a non-functioning kidney from a 12-year-old child using a single port access laparoscopic surgical technique.
To conduct the operation, which they think to be a first for New Jersey, surgeons at Robert Wood’s Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital were able to operate through a single entry point, as opposed to making several incisions. Typical laparoscopic procedures require the placement of three or more ports.
The device used on the 12-year-old, called the ASC TriPort, made by Ireland-based Advanced Surgical Concepts, allows up to three instruments to be used simultaneously through a single incision. The operation is performed using special telescopic cameras and curved surgical instruments.
Benefits for patients include faster recovery and less post-operative pain and scarring, as well as reduced risk for infection. Patients often can return home within one day…
