Covidien gets 510(k) clearance > SILS Port Multiple Instrument Access Port

Is single-incision laparoscopic surgery an evolving technology which is showing great promise for patients who need minimally-invasive surgery? Is there less chance of infection, less scarring and better cosmetic results, meaning patients can recover faster because there are fewer incisions? Can we expect to see this technique being applied to more and more general laparoscopic surgeries?

…Covidien (COV: News ) Thursday announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted a 510(k) clearance to market the Covidien SILS Port Multiple Instrument Access Port for laparoscopic surgeries through a single incision.

The SILS Port is a single, flexible port that can be fitted through a small incision in the umbilicus which results in a single “hidden scar,” a cosmetic advance over the multiple visible scars associated with standard multi-port laparoscopy. The port has the capacity for up to three laparoscopic instruments, the company said.
