First Transvaginal NOTES surgery > Transvaginal gall bladder removal > Split Hospital Croatia > Minimally-invasive surgery

What are the benefits of performing a cholecystectomy through a 20mm umbilical port that might increase the risk of abdominal wall complications? Will it be possible to reduce the size of the instruments and scopes to make them suitable for a smaller umbilical port? What role have flexible scopes with operative channels and endoscopic instruments?

…Doctors at Split Hospital have performed laparoscopic surgery on gall bladders through the vaginas of three female patients in the first operations of that sort in Croatia.

…all three operation had been conducted last weekend without pain or scars. Radonic said the hospital had been preparing for such operations for two years.

Each operation, which lasted an hour and a half half, was performed by two Split doctors, Zdravko Perko and Zeljko Mimica, supported by Zoran Cala who came from Zagreb to help them.

…is a modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incisions rather than the large incisions needed in traditional surgical procedures…

According to Radonic, Split hospital will very soon begin using laparoscopic surgery in other types of cases.

He also said doctors in nearby countries were interested in the surgery and Croatian doctors would soon begin teaching their colleagues in Bulgaria and Romania about it.
